TikTok Spark Ads Explained: How to Run a Creator Video as an Ad (2026)

TikTok Spark Ads let you put ad spend behind a real post, your own or a creator's, with the likes, comments and profile intact. Here is how the spark code works, what the authorization period means for usage rights, what it costs, and how to tell if it sells.

Most TikTok ads fail for a boring reason: they look like ads. People have spent years training their thumbs to skip anything that feels produced, and the thumb is faster than your message. TikTok Spark Ads are the platform's own answer to that problem. Instead of uploading an ad file, you put budget behind a post that already exists, yours or a creator's, so it shows up as an ad but looks and behaves like everything else in the feed.

For brands that already buy UGC, Spark Ads are the obvious bridge between a creator's video and paid reach. This guide covers what the format is, how the spark code works, what the authorization period means for your contract, and how to find out whether a Spark Ad actually sells.

TikTok Spark Ads in short

  • What they are: a TikTok ad format that runs an organic post as a paid ad. The ad keeps its likes, comments, shares and the profile it was posted from.
  • Your post or a creator's: you can boost a video from your own brand account, or run a creator's video from the creator's own profile with their permission.
  • The spark code: the creator generates a video code in the TikTok app and sends it to you. You paste it into TikTok Ads Manager. You can batch authorize up to 20 codes at a time.
  • Authorization period: the code is valid for a set period chosen when it is created. Treat that period as part of the usage rights and put it in writing.
  • Cost: the format itself costs nothing extra. You pay the creator and you pay TikTok for the media.

What are Spark Ads on TikTok?

TikTok describes Spark Ads as a native ad format that lets you use organic TikTok posts in your advertising. In practice that means the ad is not a separate file sitting in Ads Manager. It is a real video, published on a real account, with budget behind it.

That has three consequences that set the format apart from a standard In-Feed ad. The ad is shown from the account that owns the video, whether that is your brand account or the creator's. Viewers can interact with it exactly like a normal post: like, comment, share, tap through to the profile and follow. And the history comes along. A video with thousands of likes and a busy comment section carries all of that social proof into every paid impression.

The engagement also stays put when the campaign ends. According to TikTok, all views, comments, shares, likes and follows gained while the video is promoted are attributed to the original organic post. With a standard In-Feed ad, that engagement lives on an ad that disappears when you switch it off.

Spark Ads vs. non-Spark Ads

A non-Spark ad is a video you upload to Ads Manager. It has no organic post behind it, no comment history, no profile that feels like a person. A Spark Ad is a living post. The difference shows in TikTok's own numbers: according to TikTok for Business, Spark Ads have a 134% higher completion rate and a 157% higher 6-second view-through rate than standard In-Feed ads.

Those are TikTok's figures about its own product, so read them as such. But the direction matches what most advertisers see: a video that was made for the feed, by someone who lives in the feed, holds attention longer than a video with a logo in the corner.

A Spark Ad is not your ad with a creator's face on it. It is the creator's post with your budget behind it. That difference is the whole point of the format.

For UGC, that makes Spark Ads the default choice. You paid for content because it looks real. Re-uploading it as a polished ad from your brand account throws away half of what you paid for.

What is a spark code on TikTok?

A spark code (TikTok calls it a video code or post code) is the permission slip that lets you run someone else's video as an ad. It is specific to one video. It gives you the right to advertise with that post, not access to the creator's account.

How to get a spark code from a creator

Per TikTok's Spark Ads creation guide, the creator does this in the app:

  1. Open the video they want to share.
  2. Tap the three dots on the video.
  3. Tap Ad settings and turn on ad authorization.
  4. Tap Generate to create the post code, choose how long it should be valid, and send the code to the brand.

What the brand does with it

In TikTok Ads Manager you paste the code in when you add a post to an ad. The video then shows up as available creative, and you build the campaign like any other: objective, audience, budget, bidding. You can batch authorize up to 20 video codes at a time, and each Ads Manager account supports up to 10,000 Spark Ads, so volume is not the constraint.

If you work with creators through TikTok's own tools, authorization can also be requested inside Content Suite, where requests default to a 365-day authorization period.

Rules to know before you launch

A few things in TikTok's documentation catch people out:

Put your requirements for hook, length, product shots and caption in the brief, before the video is made. After that, you get what is on the profile.

The authorization period is a usage right, so price it

When the creator generates the code, they choose how long it is valid. When it expires, the ad stops unless the creator renews it. That sounds like a technical detail. It is not. The authorization period is part of the usage rights you are buying, and it should affect the price.

A video you can run as an ad for a year is worth more than one you can run for a month, for the same reason extended usage costs more in any UGC deal. So write it down before the code is generated: which video, how long, whether it runs from the creator's profile, and what happens if a winning ad needs to keep going. Two lines in the agreement save an awkward conversation in the middle of a campaign that works.

How much do TikTok Spark Ads cost?

TikTok does not charge extra for Spark Ads compared with other ad formats. The bill has two parts.

The first is the creator fee. Normal UGC rates apply, plus a premium for paid usage and for running the ad from the creator's own profile. That is the most extensive use you can agree with a creator, and it should be priced like it. How you structure the fee (flat fee, commission per sale, a bonus for winners) is a separate choice, covered in how to pay creators. Every model works with Spark Ads.

The second part is media spend, which works like any other auction in Ads Manager. There is no minimum specific to Spark Ads.

If you are a creator asking how much to charge for Spark Ads: price the authorization period and the paid usage separately from the video itself, and charge more for longer periods. Brands that know what they are doing expect it.

Disclose the partnership

Spark Ads are labeled as sponsored by TikTok, so the ad placement is covered. The organic post is a different matter. If the creator was paid or got free product, the FTC's guidance for influencers says the material connection has to be disclosed clearly, with terms like "ad" or "sponsored" or TikTok's own branded content toggle, and not buried in a pile of hashtags. Both the brand and the creator carry responsibility, so it belongs in the same agreement as the usage rights.

Does TikTok have the reach?

Depends who you sell to. According to Pew Research Center, 37% of U.S. adults said they use TikTok in its 2025 survey, up from 21% in 2021. Among adults under 30 the share is 63%. If your customers are young, TikTok is a main channel, and Spark Ads are how your creator deals turn into ads without losing what made them work.

How to run Spark Ads with UGC creators

  1. Start in the brief. Say up front that the video may run as a Spark Ad from the creator's account, and for how long. Permission after the fact always costs more.
  2. Let the creator post organically first. A few days of real views, likes and comments give the ad its credibility.
  3. Boost the winners, not everything. Look at which posts hold viewers and drive clicks. Spark Ads work best when they amplify something that has already proven itself.
  4. Collect the code and build the campaign. Objective, audience and budget, same as any other campaign.
  5. Measure per video and pay accordingly. Once you know which videos sell, creator pay can follow results.

The Meta version of the same idea is called partnership ads. The principle is identical, a creator's post run from their own account, and most stores that invest in UGC run both formats with the same video. Setup and differences are in Meta partnership ads explained.

How to tell if a Spark Ad actually sells

Ads Manager will show you views, clicks, engagement and its own conversion count. What it will not show you is how many people bought in your store because of that specific video, counted once. TikTok, Meta and Snapchat each report conversions from their own point of view, and the same order often gets claimed by more than one of them. How to get from views to proven sales is in how to measure influencer marketing ROI.

This is one of the reasons Attribyte exists. Every approved video gets its own trackable link, and that link follows the content wherever it goes: the creator's organic post, the link in bio, and a Spark Ad running from the creator's profile. Sales are matched in your Shopify store with 7-day last-click attribution across Meta, TikTok and Snapchat, and credited once. You see ROAS per video (a 9.5 on one creator and a 0.8 on another tells you where the next dollar goes) and creators get paid automatically based on what their video actually sold, or on organic views if that is the deal.

Frequently asked questions

What are Spark Ads on TikTok?

Spark Ads are a TikTok ad format that runs an organic post as a paid ad, with the likes, comments, shares and profile intact. The post can be your own or a creator's. TikTok reports higher completion and view-through rates for Spark Ads than for standard In-Feed ads.

How do I get a spark code on TikTok?

The creator opens the video in the TikTok app, taps the three dots, goes to Ad settings, turns on ad authorization and taps Generate. They choose how long the code is valid and send it to you. You paste it into TikTok Ads Manager when you add the post to an ad.

How long does a Spark Ads authorization last?

The creator sets the period when generating the code. Requests sent through TikTok's Content Suite default to 365 days. When the period ends, the ad stops unless the authorization is renewed, so agree the duration in your contract before the code is created.

Can I edit a Spark Ad after it is set up?

No. The display name and post text cannot be changed in Ads Manager, and the video runs as it was posted. If something needs to change, the creator posts a new version and generates a new code.

How much should a creator charge for Spark Ads?

There is no fixed rate. Price the authorization period and paid usage on top of the video fee, with longer periods costing more. Running the ad from the creator's own profile is the most extensive usage and should carry the biggest premium.

What happens to the engagement when the campaign ends?

It stays. TikTok attributes all views, comments, shares, likes and follows from the promotion to the original organic post, unlike a standard In-Feed ad where engagement disappears with the ad.
